  5. Assess your strengths and weaknesses to figure out where and how to apply them, to know when and how to say no and to get the most out of work.
  6. Identify stressors, the things that fulfill you the most and those that don’t. What activities engage you the most? If your aren’t applying your strengths and interests at work, find areas outside of work to do so.
  7. Prioritize what matters most, avoid multitasking, pay attention to the vital few, keep your life simple and don’t be afraid of missing out.
  8. Align your daily activities in life and work with your values, principles.
  9. Set specific goals for yourself to increase motivation, to build up confidence and to stay focused.
  10. Be more disciplined. In order to make your life worthwhile, avoid distractions. This means that you have to shut down your phones, your television and avoid checking your emails outside of work.
  11. Be open to new opportunities, new experiences.
  12. Build real connections and learn to discern the authentic relationships by observing their actions.
  13. During the day, clear out at least one hour to relax and empty out your mind. Try meditation and a new sport. If it is not working, give yourself the space and the time to explore new things.

  3. Believe that you are trustworthy, that people are trustworthy even though you are aware of snakes in the grass. You can demonstrate trust by soliciting people’s opinion in one on ones.
  4. Believe that relationships are important to your career and to your self-development.
  5. Be reasonable. Monitor your behavior and what you say to people on a daily basis.
  6. Be patient and wait for an opportunity to present itself. Prepare yourself in the meanwhile by taking training and becoming an expert in your field.
  7. Get to know your audience, the decision makers and the influencers in the workplace. This means that you have t identify and anticipate their triggers, their motivations, their challenges, their needs. For example, ask specific questions to discover what someone cares about. Furthermore, discreetly get their attention and align yourself with them.
  8. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Respect yourself and the people around you even though they don’t reciprocate. Also, respect their time and opinion, accept them for who they are.
  9. Expect the best behavior from people even if you don’t like them and even though their behavior is not the best.
  10. Stay positive and develop your emotional intelligence to understand your emotions, those of others and to sustain your work relationships.
  11. Increase self-awareness. Assess your people skills and seek to develop them.
  12. Be assertive and clearly set boundaries to your relationships.
  13. Stay on top of corporate opinions and make sure you align yourself with them.
  14. Work on being more approachable. For example, if you are serious, smile a little more often. If you are very private, reveal a little bit about yourself to your coworkers.
  15. Identify and adapt the corporate communication style in order to express yourself. For instance, learn how to cordially disagree with your coworkers.
  16. Avoid destructive conflicts and avoid making enemies uselessly.
  17. Keep networking and making your new-found contacts your most valuable allies.
  18. Invest time and energy into your employees. Create a sense of unity and openness and show team spirit. Don’t allow people to feel excluded or disconnected and promote collaboration.
  19. Increase your team’s self-esteem. Make people, mostly your younger workers, feel good about themselves. You can do this by giving out meaningful assignments and validating the contributions of your employees. If your employees are not able to fulfill their duties, coach them or send them to a training instead of taking away their responsibilities.

  22. Address important issues in the room during meetings and don’t allow them to grow.

  25. Avoid gossip and spreading negativity. Gossiping will not dissipate misunderstandings but will only exacerbate them.
  26. When a situation turns sour, identify the reasons why. Look at yourself beforehand, own a piece of a problem, avoid shifting blame and see how you could have positioned yourself differently. Also, to maintain relationships, quietly make amends, repair past damages, be accountable for your actions, without needing to ask for forgiveness or without begging.
  27. At work, we connect differently with our coworkers and sometimes take that connection outside of the workplace. With some coworkers, we are comfortable enough to talk about our private lives, families and are able to take the relationship beyond the workplace. We either think that our coworkers are out friends and families or we either don’t care to be liked by them. It is therefore necessary to learn how to discern personal and professional connections in the workplace.

Quitters are losers! Sometimes, quitters are not lazy nor weak. Quitters have not given up on themselves or on they dream, they know how to leave when the situation is not to their liking. Besides, winners have failed and given up may times before being successful.

I’ll stay if I get paid enough! However, you already have one foot out of the door and no type of incentive can keep you on the job.

There are five common reasons why people tend to stay in a frustrating job:

  1. Financial responsibility. People in this case rely heavily on a stable income. Changing jobs and choosing a fulfilling career doesn’t mean leaving the life of a broke artists or taking a lower paid job. It requires forward planning, saving and preparation.
  2. Employee retention programs. In certain organization, retirement and funds programs are specifically designed to retain employees, to reduce training costs and ameliorate their statistics.
  3. Misplaced loyalty towards the organization. Employees with misplaced loyalty are not willing to compromise their years of service to the organization and leave for a much more fulfilling career. I see this behavior mostly in leaders, who have extreme responsibilities and who refuse to let a disappointing job go. Just know this: no matter how long you have worked for an organization, they have no sense of commitment towards their employees and employees shouldn’t have towards them either.
  4. Fear of change. Most people stay in an unfulfilling job because they fear the unknown and are overly cautious. Job satisfaction is about not being complacent and going after what you really want.
  5. Pessimism or fear of failure. Some employees believe that there isn’t better career options out there, believe that it will get worse that it actually is or that they will fail. it is necessary for these employees to broaden their scope and evaluate their options with exterior help.

How to find satisfaction or meaning on your job?

In order to bring job satisfaction or find a fulfilling career:

  1. Recognize that time is short. You don’t have the luxury of doing something you hate all the days of your life.
  2. Know yourself well, identify your motivations, strengths and weaknesses to know whether or not you will thrive in the occupation that you have chosen, to find a job that is aligned with your values and principles. Then, find out what you do best with the least amount of effort, a hobby or passion and create a way to make money out of it.
  3. Gain the necessary skills for your new career. Don’t hesitate to take the initiative, get training and lead yourself towards your real aspirations.
  4. Ensure that you have multiple streams of income and are not bound to any job for a paycheck. Diversify with income-creative activities that you enjoy and don’t take up all your time.
  5. Explore different career paths by getting out of your comfort zone, ask new questions, renew your skills, activate your sense of discovery, trust yourself and listen to your inner voice, take a class, go on a retreat, broaden your perspective.
  6. Get realistic information and job descriptions, expected behaviors from employees in order to clarify their roles within the organization.
  7. Align your expectations of the job with reality. Recognize the impact of your work on yourself, your family and friends, and your community and take note of the discrepancies between your efforts and the rewards.
  8. Build a social life but avoid comparing yourself to others.
  9. Assess the time you need away from people and away from work to recharge your batteries.
  10. Every day remind yourself of your purpose and do it everyday. Stay in the present and trust the future. Persevere and stay committed, advance toward new opportunities and challenges.
